The first camera I ever snapped a picture with was my father’s Canon AV-1, circa late-80s. I remember taking a picture of our car when I was very young. From that point on, I just actually kept growing up… without a camera.
In college, I took a non-credit photography course using my father’s Canon av-1. the course was eye-opening, particularly learning how to make our own prints. It was amazing to simply drop this blank piece of paper into a bin of chemicals and have an image magically appear. Our teacher stressed the importance of finding comfort in our own style, and I keep those words in the back of my head still to this day.
I now shoot digitally, have since left film behind (not that it was all too familiar anyways), and also the Canon av-1. Even though the camera doesn’t work anymore, it sits on my bookcase as a reminder of photography and my father. It is my favorite camera in my collection.
What do I love about photography? I love seeing the world through a lens. I love documenting all of my amazing travel adventures. I love sharing slices of life with those around me. I love capturing the small moments. I love sifting through everything that is happening, and finding a story that could have been lost.
